Esophago-bronchial fistula with diverticulum in adults is very rare and 65 cases are reported in Japan. The clinical details of a 65-year-old man with esophago-bronchial fistula are reported.
He was admitted with complaints of coughing and regurgitation on swallowing, slight fever and severe body weight loss since 6 months before.
Esophagogram and esophagoscophy revealed a diverticulum and primary orifice of fistula in the midesophagus. Bronchofiberscopy showed the connection between esophagus and bronchus.
Dissection of the fistula and diverticulum was performed easily, because no inflammatory changes were found in the surrounding tissues of the diverticulum. His clinical course was satisfactory.
We have reviewed the literatures and discussed differential diagnosis between the congenital and acquired types of esophagobronchial fistula in adults and the reason why symptoms become apparent after adolescence.
