Abstract
We studied the frequency, operative technique and results in ileus cases due to colorectal cancers during the last 5 years, and considered the treatment policies especially operation timing and operative technique.
1. Preoperative ileus symptoms were observed in 10.2% of the patients with cancer of the large intenstine. No difference was noted between the left and right colon.
2. In the right colon cases, remission in ileus symptoms can be anticipated during conservative treatment but almost left colon cases require emergency operationS.
3. In emergency operation cases, operative technique for the right colon was commonly selected an one-step single approach of resection and anastomosis, since it easy to remove the intestinal contents. For the left colon, selected techniques included systemic administration of antibiotics before operation, followed by subtotal colectomy with favorable results. Subtotal colectomy requires careful decision on its indications but from the viewpoint of preventing postoperative infection, it appears an effective technique.
