Three cases of breast cancer in subjects with augmentation mammoplasty are described here in and discussed with a brief review of the literature.
The breasts in case 1 were augmented by injection of silicon gel, and those in case 2 and 3 by insertion of silicon bag. Breast cancer developed 18 years, 14 months, and 14 years after augmentation mammoplasty in Case 1, 2, and 3, respectively. Case 1 and 2 had a stage Ma breast cancer and Case 3 had a stage II breast cancer. Each breast cancer was in an advanced stage, because these subjects presented difficulties in early detection. The relation of organic synthetics for augmentation mammoplasty to breast cancer is still obscure. These data may suggest that a through check-up for possible presence of neoplastic lesions should be carried out before beast augmentation mammoplasty, and a periodic follow-up with mammography and ultrasonography is of prime importance for early detection of breast cancer.
