Abstract
We successfully treated a case of paraumbilical hernia by tention free hernioplasty according to Prolene Hernia System® (PHS). A 66-year-old woman was seen at the department because of discomfort of the lower navel in June, 2002. Paraumbilical hernia was diagnosed by various examinations, and tention free hernioplasty according to PHS under general anethesia was enforced in November, 2002. The postoperative course was uneventful and the patient was discharged from the hospital on the 11th postoperative day. There have been no signs of recurrence, as of April 2003. Paraumbilical hernia is the a rare entity. It appears due to a defect of the umbilical ring, and the etiology is different from that of umbilical hernia. Compared to umbilical hernia, paraumbilical hernia is prone to be incarcerated and consequently surgery in early stage is desirable. Attention must be paid to possible multiple occurrences in this disease. PHS is useful for repair of this hernia which provides dual reinforcement to the fragile abdominal wall.
