It has recently been suggested, that the incidence of idiopathic intussusception in childhood is decreasing. However, it is not easy to demonstrate it, because the patients in an area can change due to the topography, means of transport, and scale, number and distribution of hospitals. This time, we select Nagasaki city and its suburbs, which are comparatively isolated from other areas and less movement of patients is thought, and made a cohort study. There been a total of 521 cases of idiopathic intussusception in childhood in Nagasaki city and its suburbs over the past 20 years. Based upon child population in this area during this period, we here could not show that the incidence of idiopathic intussusception in childhood is decreasing or increasing.
