Abstract
This article reviews 3 areas concerned with "listening to music" by which to attain mental health. We can make effective use of listening to music under the right conditions looking at these areas. First, we should comprehend the situations in which we like to listen to music. Second, we should select the music type matching with individual own personality traits. Third, we should comprehend whether or not our arousal levels make good adaptations for listening to music and what the arousal levels are we need. There are some problems to solve concerning these areas. Subjective cognition is assumed to confuse the measurement of the situations and personality traits. The interactions among the variables reflecting these areas are predicted, and it is required to clarify the phenomena produced by these interactions and the process of it. Further investigations are expected to clarify the relationships among music, personality traits and the arousal levels on the two dimensional models, and to develop the techniques for measurements of arousal states on the 2D models.
