Disc electrophoresis on polyacrylamide gel was carried out on cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) protein of 146 cases with cerebral vascular diseases.
1) The electrophoretic patterns of CSF protein are usually classified into 10 types. The frequencies of appearance of each type in our case are given in parenthesis. Mixed type (12%), albumin type (12%), MII+AII type (8%), γ-globulin type (16%), prealbumin increased type (1%), prealbumin decreased type (8%), prealbumin 3 fraction type (0%), concentration type (2%), combination type (13%), and normal type (28%).
2) Abnormal electrophoretic patterns of CSF protein were observed in 43 out of 62 cases with cerebral aneurysm (mean total protein in CSF is increased: 47.3mg/dl), 14 out of 19 with subarachnoidal bleeding (increased: 82.6mg/dl), 16 out of 19 with cerebral hemorrhage (increased: 48.6mg/dl), 8 out of 10 with intracranial bleeding (increased: 50.6mg/dl), 13 out of 18 with cerebral softening (increased: 46.7mg/dl), 2 out of 4 with subdural bleeding (not increased: 33.3mg/dl), and 5 out of 14 with other cerebral vascular diseases (not increased: 31.5mg/dl).
