A series of circumstances that led to inauguration of Japan Society for Controlled Ecological Life Support Systems and activity of the society are explained. The name of the society was changed to “the Society of Eco-Engineering” in 2001. This article is written based on Ashida and Hirate (1996) and Nitta (2015).
