To determine the effect of the orientation of buttonholes on the buttoning and unbuttoning, we used three samples with different orientations (vertical, horizontal, and diagonal) to perform a sensory evaluation of the ease of buttoning/unbuttoning, measure the time required for buttoning/unbuttoning, and measure arm movement when buttoning/unbuttoning. Our results confirmed that the required time and the movement and ease of buttoning/unbuttoning were all affected by buttonhole orientation. Buttoning/unbuttoning tended to be easier, requiring less time and smaller arm movement, for vertical and diagonal buttonholes than for horizontal one. Conversely, horizontal buttonholes required grasping then rotating the button to match the buttonhole orientation. These caused arm movement and the time required for buttoning/unbuttoning to increase. As a result, it was suggested that buttoning/unbuttoning was difficult. Similar tendencies were found when buttoning/unbuttoning on manikin simulating other person’s clothes.
