The Individual Difference of a Torso Shape of Young Women From the View Point of 3D Surface Curvature for Clothing Design

Abstract

In order to develop a new clothing design for each body shape, we have investigated the differences in individual torso surface shapes by observing the relationship between developable and undevelopable surface of 3D surface Curvature. The 3D coordinates of the points on 203 young women's torso surfaces were recorded with a 3D digitizer, and the torso forms were simulated with a triangulated polyhedron. Each concentrated Angle θ at the vertex was calculated for either an internal Concentrated Gaussian Curvature (Kc=2π-θ), or boundary line Concentrated Geodesic Curvature (kc=2π-θ) . The total of Kc and k c for each model was -4π as which followed the pattern of angular conservation in accordance with Gauss-Bonnet theorem. On a macro level, we evaluated the differences of each model curved surface shape from the distribution of two Curvatures regardless of size, in terms of Total Sum values, Sum positive values, Sum negative values, and Sum absolute values of Kc in 6 areas of the interior torso surface and kc in 3 boundary lines. On a micro level, we examined the differences of two Curvatures of each point in each area and on each line. The individual differences of torso surface Curvatures could be categorized into two types, i.e., the value size and the shape. The color map of two curvatures of every point on the torso surface and the development of each boundary line were displayed automatically, thus making these color map and boundary lines the highly informative tool for understanding the individual differences of the torso surface.
