Abstract

2-Deoxy-2-carboxymethoxy-acetylamino-1,3,4,6-tetra-O-decanoyl-D-glucopyranose (C9GLNDGAA; RH) has been developed for the extraction of lanthanide ions from aqueous nitrate solution. The present extractant extracts lanthanide ions (M) by two types of extraction mechanism. The extracted species are determined to be MR3(RH)3 for the lighter ions from La3+ to Sm3+, and MR2(RH)2NO3 for the heavier ions from Eu3+ to Yb3+. The extraction of lanthanide ions seems to be directly affected by the steric hindrance of the glucosamine framework.
