Abstract
Recent rapid advances in welding methods for manufacture of cans has made it desirable to develop new and economical materials.
Experiments were performed showing that the best chromate layer on nickel plating was obtained by electrolytic cathodic treatment in a CrO3-SO42-bath. From the viewpoint of weldability and lacquered performance, the optimum weight of chromium coating was found to be 3-15mg/m2. It is considered that the chromate layer consists of metallic chromium, insolble chromium oxide and hydrated chromium oxide.
Pack tests prove that nickel plated steel sheet with chromate treatment has characteristics that make it an excellent material for welded cans.
