Abstract
Concentrations of chemical vapors in indoor air depend upon their emission and ventilation rates. The emission rates of chemical vapors in a room are usually estimated by adding up the rates for various types of construction materials and furniture. It is recommended to measure emission rates of those materials using a special chamber system following JIS method. However, it is considerably expensive to prepare chamber system. Thus, we simplified the measurement procedure by using an ordinary room and ventilation fans. With this method, we derived the average emission rates for about twenty different volatile organic compounds, including formaldehyde and toluene. The results obtained with our simple method agreed reasonably well with the reported values, although we need more measurements to verify this method.
