Saikyuki, a typical book of ceremonies for the Heian period, has many bibliographic problems. In this paper, the author examines the Mibu MS. of the Saikyuki kept in the Archives and Mausolea Department of the Imperial Household (Kunaicho-Shoryobu). This manuscript is one of principal pre-Edo period manuscripts, and important in tracing the genealogy of the work. The aim in this paper is to shed light on the original contents of the Mibu MS. through its various copies. At present the Mibu MS. consists of 17 volumes in addition to a volume of notes and relevant documents about how it was lent out during the Kan-ei era (1624〜1644) and a volume listing its contents. Four of the 17 volumes are new (i.e., Edo period) transcriptions, and there are 2 old transcribed volumes that are not contained in the Saikyuki. In other words, the Mibu MS. is not in its original state. This is shown by the Momijiyamabunko MS. kept in the Cabinet Library (Naikakubunko). The Momijiyamabunko MS. contains the main text of the Mibu MS. (in addition to notations written at the head and the back side of each volume) copied exactly volume by volume during Keicho 19 and 20 (1614〜1615). This MS. and related records prove that (1)the Mibu MS. at the end of Keicho era consisted of 23 vols, one volume not contained in the Saikyuki, and (2)old transcriptions existed in the newly transcribed volumes extant today. The Tanaka MS. kept in the National Museum of Japanese History (Kokuritsu-rekishiminzoku-hakubutsukan) is one of old transcribed volumes lost by the Mibu family after the Keicho era. In Kan-ei 5 (1628) the Mibu MS. consisted of more vols. than today. Newly transcribed vols. were made until about Kanmon 4 or 5 (1664・1665). Another important manuscript for the examining the original contents of the Mibu MS. is the Maedake-daiei-shohon (Daiei MS.)kept in the Sonkeikakubunko. This MS., whose close relation to the Mibu MS. has been already pointed out by Hayakawa Shohachi, was produced by the Sanjonishi family in during the Daiei era (1521〜1528). Comparing damaged spots in the Mibu MS. with corresponding sections in the Daiei MS. proves that parts of the Daiei MS. were copied from it. Comparing the Daiei MS. with the Momijiyamabunko MS. on the volumes missing from the Mibu MS. proves that the Daiei MS. is a copy of the Mibu MS.. Based on these results, the author examines overlapping parts in the extraodinary ceremonies volumes missing from the Mibu MS. and discovers a continuation of the text from a version which corresponds to the Maedake-kansubon Saiki-mokuroku, a catalogue of the Saikyuki (This version was found out by Hayakawa), thus enabling him to arrange most of the overlapping parts in extraodinary ceremonies volumes in their original order.
