The Fushime geothermal field, located at the southern extremity of the Satsuma Peninsula, Kyushu, Japan, had been explored by Japan Petroleum Exploration Co., Ltd. (JAPEX) since 1977. JAPEX Geothermal Kyushu Ltd. was established in 1988 in order to develop this field. In this field, various geophysical, geological and geochemical investigations were carried out and 23 wells were drilled by JAPEX and JAPEX Geothermal Kyushu Ltd.
The Fushime geothermal system is characterized by high reservoir temperature (measured maximum temperature is 373Åé), high salinity and high silica concentration of fluid, and the cooler inversion around the depth of 1000m. Also the production wells are characterized by high discharge enthalpy and high temperature and pressure at the wellhead observed at the starting of well discharge.
The steam production and hot water reinjection system of the Yamagawa (Fushime) geothermal power plant was designed to prevent the silica and sulfide scaling and also to reduce the salinity of steam supplied to the steam turbine. Numerical reservoir simulations suggest that reservoir potential is large enough to produce steam for 30MW for an extended period of time.
The Yamagawa geothermal power plant will be fully operated in early 1995.
