Galvanized steel is used as a general term to cover a variety of materials. Each product has been developed to give special properties needed in each field. Typical products include: 1) normal hot dip galvanized steel (GI), 2) galvanealed steel (GA) providing good weldability and press formability, 3) Zn-55% Al alloy coated steel (GL) providing extremely high corrosion resistance, 4) Zn-low Al content-(Mg) alloy coated steels (GF) with self-sacrificing corrosion protection, 5) electro-galvanized steel providing white and excellent surface appearance. In this paper, the author would like to describe the features of these galvanized steels from the viewpoint of chemical composition and surface properties.
