Basic corrosion theory which has been developed based on electrochemistry is described with focusing the potential-pH diagram and the electrode kinetics to understand the corrosion process of iron and steel. The importance of oxygen reduction and inhibitive function of corrosion film on the steel surface in neutral solution is pointed out for understanding corrosion phenomena experienced in daily life. Close relationship between air pollution and steel corrosion is demonstrated. Development of weathering steel contributes for improving the atmospheric corrosion. Highly protective property of the passive film on stainless steel is described.
