Abstract
We evaluated the clinical and bacteriological effects of cefpodoxime proxetil (CPDX-PR) in acne vulgaris. Forty-three patients (14 males and 29 females) with acne vulgaris (Pillusbury's 2nd grade) were enrolled in this study. Two hundred mg of CPDX-PR was taken orally by each patient for four weeks. Clinical response was excellent in 12, good in 15, fair in 6, poor in 6, and unchanged in 4. During the treatment, no side effects such as diarrhea were seen. The rate of clinical efficacy including “extremely useful” and “useful” was 62.8%. Propionibacterium acnes (P.acnes) strains isolated from acne lesions were very sensitive to CPDX-PR, and MICs of P. acnesranged 0.025 to 0.20μg/ml. These results suggested that oral administration of CPDX-PR is arelatively useful treatment for acne vulgaris.
