Our previous study showed that immediate reactions such as contact urticaria as well as contact dermaititis occured after topical application of squaric acid dibutylester (SADBE) in some alopecia patients during topical immunotherapy using SADBE.
In this study, we investigated histopathological findings and dermal mast cell counts in the sites applied with SADBE in alopecia patients. In HE stain, it is observed that acanthosis and perivascular lymphocytic infiltration in the upper and mid dermis in addition to atrophic hair follicles and peribulber lymphocytic infiltrations. There is no significant difference in the histological findings in HE stain between the group with immediate reactions for SADBE and the group without immediate reactions. However, a significant increase of dermal mast cells was recognized in the group with immediate reaction for SADBE compared with that in the group without immediate reactions for SADBE
