In on-site construction of timber stress-laminated box-beam bridges, use of torque wrenches can make the on-site prestressing easy. In the case of prestressing for longer bars such as PC bars than high strength bolts, the torque introduced by the torque wrench may be consumed not only by friction but also by torsional deformation and possibly by torsional buckling. In this study we investigate how the torsional deformation and the torsional buckling influence the prestress control. According to experimental and numerical considerations, we conclude that the torque introduced by the torque wrench is consumed by friction and torsional deformation.
