The introduction of advanced technology such as UAV into bridge inspection is attracting attention. This study focused on steel bridges. Field tests were conducted on two selected steel bridges in Gifu prefecture. Field test results showed that some of advanced technologies have reached almost the same level of human visual inspection. Based on the field tests results, the advantages/limitations of the technologies were identified. The requirements for utilizing advanced robotic technology into steel bridge inspection were suggested in this paper. It was concluded that formulating standards and guidelines is an effective way to apply robotic technology into bridge inspection.
