In the previous paper, the author described that artificial sea water resembling natural sea water, such as LYMAN and FLEMING's sea water, should be used to detect the marine microorganisms taking part in the precipitation of calcium carbonate in media prepared with artificial sea water. The present study deals with the detection and grouping of the bacteria taking part in the precipitation of calcium carbonate.
The results obtained are summarized as follows:
1. As for the microorganisms taking part in the precipitation of calcium carbonate, 653 strains of bacteria and 32 strains of yeast were detected out of 3517 strains of microorganisms isolated from various sea areas, i.e. the North Pacific, mainly the Okhotsk Sea and the Bering Sea, the area south of the islands proper to Japan and the East China Sea, the southwest part of Sumatra and the Indian Ocean.
2. Six hundred and fifty-three strains of bacteria taking part in the precipitation of calcium carbonate were divided into four groups, i.e. cocci, monopolar gram-negative rods, peritrichous gram-negative rods, non-motile gram-negative rods, on the basis of main morphological characteristics.
