抄録

Vigorous aeration which promoted the growth of Escherichia coli resulted in a remarka-ble repression of trimethylamine N-oxide reductase formation in cells. The response in enzyme formation to the aeration was somewhat quicker than that of whole cell growth. The aeration, however, hardly brought about any inactivation of enzymes which cells could acquire.
Cell suspensions incubated under aerobic conditions, or shifted from anaerobiosis to aerobiosis, exhibited significantly low enzyme activity as compared with those incubated in the anaerobic environment.
It was concluded from this that oxygen inhibits not only the formation of this enzyme but also its activity.
