Abstract

It was tried to prepare a carbon-fiber-reinforced-cement-mortar (CFRC) plates (20 mm in thickness) with small amount of carbon fiber (CF) paper only in one side of specimen.
The CFRC plates were prepared by the following process.A cement mortar layer of 2 mm in thickness was placed on the bottom of the mould first, and then CF paper previously impregnated with portland cement paste was put over it with the thickness of 2-3 mm. Finaly another part of cement mortar was poured over the CF paper layer, and then the CFRC was placed in water for curing.
The following factors were investigated on the mechanical properties of the obtained CFRCs: (1) kinds of CF (PAN based HPCF and pitch based GPCF), (2) impregnatation methods of cement paste into CF paper, (3) curing method, and (4) mortar composition.
The CFRC (0.7vol% in CF contents) prepared by the lamination of 8 sheets of HPCF or GPCF paper, exhibited 19 MPa and 12 MPa in flexural strength, respectively. The flexural strength of these CFRCs was about 2-3 times higher than that of mortar itself. The deflection of the CFRC was about 3-6 times larger than that of cement mortar without CF.
Thus the mechanical properties of CFRC were remarkably improved by the sucsessful utilization of CF paper in spite of small CF contents.
