After the extraordinarily rich deep-sea fauna of Sagami Bay was discovered by Ludwig Doderlein about 120 years ago, a German zoologist, Franz Doflein, carried out the first comprehensive study of the bay's deep-sea fauna and environment. Many Japanese marine animals were originally described based on his collections, which have been deposited in several European museums but scarcely ever re-examined up to now. In this article, the research history of the deep-sea fauna of Sagami Bay is briefly reviewed. Then the significance of Doflein's collections is discussed, not only with respect to taxonomic studies, but with special consideration of their possible role as a record of the fauna a century ago.
