Five cases of malignant melanoma with adjacent intraepidermal proliferation of melanocytes are reported. Two were on the plantar surface, two on mucous membrane, and one subungual. All of these cases may be classified histopatho-logically as lentigo maligna melanoma, but clinically differ from descriptions of lentigo maligna in being not on exposed surfaces and in their greater degree of malignancy and resultant prognosis. The intraepidermal proliferation of melanocyte (lentigo maligna type) took place after the onset of malignant melanoma in two cases. Although there may be differences in sites related to race, in ages of patients at onset and in biological behavior, malignant melanomas with adjacent intraepidermal proliferation of melanocytes on the sole of the foot and mucous membrane may be quite malignant with generalized metastases and death. It would be wise to consider these lesions on the sole of the foot or on the mucous membrane as full malignant melanoma.
