When administered intravenously in a dose of 0.8 grm. or more per kilo of body weight or subcutaneously in a dose of 1.5 grm. or more into the previously non-anaesthetized, non-fastened dog, urethane will accelerate the rate of the epinephrine liberation from the suprarenal gland. But the degree of acceleration is extremely small as compared with the case of poisoning with guanidine, 10) peptone11) or of severe haemorrhage, 12) etc. And the latency of the action is also very long in comparison with these cases. The latency becomes much longer if the drug is given subcutaneously, so that for a fairly long time after the injection, as two hours or so, the rate can remain without being materially accelerated.
In the present investigations the epinephrine was cstimated by means of the rabbit intestine strip method in most cases, and the paradoxical eye of the cat was also employed in a few examples, the results in these cases agreeing with those obtained by the rabbit intestine strip method.
