Following the development of cosmetics, there is a move to ban animal testing in the food industry field. In drug development, the FDA has announced the acceptance of in vitro data in the FDA Modernization Act 2.0. This trend is expected to promote the use of in vitro safety evaluation of pharmaceuticals and other chemical substances. Under such circumstances, MPS (Mycrophysiological Systems), which are culture systems that mimic in vivo tissues and organs, are attracting attention. In Japan, the development of MPS was carried out in collaboration with industry, government, and academia under the lead of AMED and METI from FY 2009 to FY 2021, and the second phase of the project started in FY 2022. Research aimed at the regulatory use of MPS data is also being conducted under the leadership of National Institute of Health Sciences assisted by AMED and MHLW. Furthermore, the second MPS World Summit will be held and the International MPS Society (iMPSS) was established. The development and utilization of MPS has been further spurred. In this presentation, I will outline these domestic and international trends and discuss the utilization of MPS, which is entering the stage from development to practical application.
