Abstract

Crepe is the plain woven fabric made by mainly cotton 100% or cotton/ramie blend for summer underwear material.
The object of this study is to explain the feature in the properties of the crepe by appling the objective measurment of fabric mechanical, air premeability and thermal properties, and develope a regression equation for the quality measurement of the crepe.
(1) Bending rigidity in warp bending is much higher than the other types of the fabrics used for the similer use. Tensiles rigidity along warp direction is also hight. Although the crepe has a little higher air perme-ability compered with the other plain woven, the markable difference has not been found in the both air perme-ability and moisture conductivities.
(2) The qualityjudgment by expert has been correlated with the five selected mechanical properties measured by KES-F, and the equation predicting the crepe quality has been derived.
The feature of the crepe is the high bending stiffness in the warp bending mode. This makes the large space between human skin and fabric as well as the effect of crepe struc-ture effect. Even though there is no maked feature in the air permeability and the thermal properties of the crepe, this mechanical feature seems effective on the coolness in summer.
