With reference to the improvement of carbon steel for springs the hardenability of SUP 3 has been studied as follows:
(1) Discussion on the effects of the chief chemical components and some hardness distributions, from the statistical data of quality control and other several investigations.
(2) Tests on mechanical properties, hardenability and microstructure.
From the study, it is urgently necessary to improve the hardenability of SUP 3, and is recognized that the practical mass effect is to be considered in every case.
