Thirteen aromatic primary amines were caused to react with ethyl orthoformate, and on the basis of the curve of the rate of formation was the order of O. A. of amines determined.
By comparing this order of O. A. with that of Hammett's substituent constants and of ionization constants it was made plain that the more electropositive the amino group is, the more readily are amidines formed in this condensation reaction involving dealcoholizing.
