γ-Aceto-γ-acetylmercaptopropyl acetate (I), γ-aceto-γ-carbethoxy-mercaptopropyl acetate (II) and γ-aceto-γ-methylmercaptopropyl acetate (III) were synthesized. Heating (I), (II) and (III) respectively with 2-methyl-4-amino-5-formaminomethylpyrimidine hydrochloride in formic acid gives vitamin B1 in cases of (I) and (II) but the condensation does not occur in the case of (III).
