Microdetermination of acetyl or benzoyl in organic compounds was attempted with the use of a cation exchange resin. The samples were saponified with 5N ethanolic sodium hydroxide solution, passed through a resin bed of Amberlite IR-120, and the amount of acetic acid or benzoic acid in the effluent was titrated with 0.01N sodium hydroxide.
The determination was made within an error of ±0.5%. The present analytical procedures are very simple, do not necessitate any special apparatus, take comparatively short time, and good results can be obtained.
