A new tertiary non-phenolic base, thalicthuberine, was isolated as colorless silky crystals, m.p. 126-127°, from the root of Thalictrum Thunbergii DC (Ranunculaceae) from Tokushima. The composition and empirical formula of this substance corresponded to C21H23O4N=C16H9(OCH3)2(N(CH3)2)(-O-CH2-O-). Its ultraviolet spectrum suggested the presence of a phenanthrene skeleton. It was optically inactive.
On the other hand, O-methyldomesticine was isolated from the commercial fruit of Nandina domestica and was derived to its methylmethine by Hofmann degradation. Comparison of this methine base and thalicthuberine by mixed fusion test, and their ultraviolet and infrared spectral analyses showed the two to be identical substances. Consequently, thalicthuberine was found to be 1-dimethylaminoethyl-3, 4-dimethoxy-6, 7-methylenedioxyphenanthrene (VII).
