The rearrangement of methylpyrazines N-oxides with acetic anhydride was examined to see whether this reaction goes in the analogous way as known in the case of 2-picoline 1-oxide.
2-Methylpyrazine 1-oxide, 4-oxide, and 1, 4-dioxide were subjected to this reaction and the following results were obtained.
(1) 2-Methylpyrazine 1-oxide was converted through 2-acetoxymethylpyrazine to 2-pyrazinemethanol.
(2) The reaction did not occur and the starting material was recovered in the case of 4-oxide.
(3) 2-Acetoxymethylpyrazine, 2-acetoxymethylpyrazine 4-oxide, and 2-methylpyrazine 1-oxide were obtained from 2-methylpyrazine 1, 4-dioxide.
