The “Middle-layer Bases” in NTU Shale Oil have been characterized as long-chained 2, 4, 6-trialkylpyridines. Three methyl groups in the structure of collidine were extended through metallation with phenylsodium and then alkylated with alkyl halides; thus long-chained 2, 4, 6-alkylpyridines were synthesized. The identity between the synthetic products and natural “Middle-layer Bases” was demonstrated by means of gas chromatography.
It was found that “Middle-layer Base” in general, has the the constitution which has appropriate long alkyl groups (e.g. C5H11-C10H21) in three directions from the central nitrogen atom or nitrogen-containing ring.
