Abstract
It was found that the use of cuprous chloride in the Grignard reaction of α, β-acetylenic acid resulted in the 1, 4-addition reaction.
Several reactions were carried out with compounds having methyl, butyl, or phenyl as R and R′ in the above formulae and it was found that interchange of R and R′ resulted in the formation of the same 3, 3-disubstituted acrylic acid, i.e.a stable trans compound. From this fact, this 1, 4-addition reaction was assumed to proceed through the formation of an intermediate (A).
