Fluorescence determination of salicylic acid esters was examined. Salicylic acid esters react with acetic anhydride solution of boric acid in acetic anhydride and form fluorescent complex of salicylic acid ester-boron of 1 : 1 ratio. Relationship between the substituents in salicylic acid esters and fluorescence intensity increases in the order of nonfluorescent p-nitrophenyl group, p-methylphenyl group, phenyl group, benzyl group, and alkyl group. Maximum excitation wave length of the fluorescence tended to be in a longer wave length region in the order of alkyl, benzyl, p-methylphenyl, and phenyl group. The same tendency was seen in the case of maximum wave length of the fluorescence. The fluorescence was quite stable. The present method was used in the determination of methyl salicylate in the commercial mixed preparations (ointments) and the values therefrom agreed fairly well with the values obtained by colorimetric determination.
