SH compounds (glutathione, 2-mercaptopropionylglycine, and cysteine) and insulin were administered to normal and alloxan-diabetic rabbits, and the variations in blood sugar value, and acid-soluble SH and S-S groups in the blood were examined for one week. The amount of SH and S-S groups in diabetic rabbits was lower than that in the normal rabbit. Administration of 100 mg/kg of 2-mercaptopropionylglycine to a normal rabbit resulted in 10% fall in blood sugar after 7.5 hr, with attendant increase in SH group and marked decrease in S-S group. Administration of insulin (1.0 unit per head) caused 52% fall in blood sugar after 2.5 hr, and the variations in SH and S-S groups were reverse to the changes by the administration of SH compounds. Amount of SH and S-S groups was increased by the administration of SH compounds or insulin in alloxan-diabetic rabbits. Blood sugar fell to 60-78% of the initial level 7.5 hr after the administration of SH compounds and 27-30% 5 hr after the administration of insulin. These results suggest that there is a relationship between the fall in blood sugar level and the increases in SH and S-S groups.
