Gas chromatographic studies on phenylpropene derivatives were carried out. As stationary phases, diethylene glycol succinate (DEGS) and SE-30 were used, and values of relative retention time of these compounds were measured. The following facts were observed with respect to their relative retention time. (1) Allyl compounds < cis-propenyl < trans-propenyl. (2) Vicinal substituted compounds to C3-chain have smaller retention time. (3) In the case of DEGS free phenol derivatives have extremely large values. (4) Correlation of substituted position to retention time is not simple. As new materials, 2, 4, 5-trimethoxy-1-allylbenzene, corresponding to the allyl compound of asarone, its two synthetic precursors, and 2, 3, 4-trimethoxy-1-allylbenzene were synthesized. It was found that, β-asarone is not an allyl compound.
