In order to clarify the behavior of taurine and glycine, which are considered to have an accelerative effect on absorption of salicylic acid derivatives, absorption rate of taurine and glycine themselves, and the rate in the presence of aspirin were examined, using rat digestive tract. Taurine and glycine were not absorbed in the stomach, either alone or in the presence of aspirin. Taurine and glycine were absorbed to a certain extent from the small intestine when alone, but their behavior differed when aspirin was present. Although taurine showed the same absorption rate whether alone or in the presence of aspirin, absorption rate of glycine increased in the presence of aspirin. These results suggest that taurine and glycine are not absorbed in the stomach but promote absorption of aspirin, while they also promote the absorption of aspirin from the small intestine but are also absorbed themselves. In the small intestine, absorption of glycine itself seems to be accelerated by aspirin.
