In the previous papers of this series, the binding tendency of styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer (SMA) with certain pharmaceuticals was discussed. In this study, data have been collected for quinine, dibucaine, sinomenine, procaine, methylephedrine, diphenhydramine and dextromethorphane. New absorption bands were observed in the visible region of the spectra for ethylene dichloride solutions of SMA containing quinine, diphenhydramine or dextromethorphane, indicating occurrence of interaction. By means of an equilibrium distribution method, it was shown that all the compounds investigated exhibited binding with SMA in the ethylene dichloride phase, and that the binding equilibria fits a Langmuir-type equation. The maximum amount (ym) of each compounds bound to SMA was found to be about 0.3 to 0.6 mmole/g. SMA at 25°. There was no significant relationship between the binding constant (K) or ym and the chemical structure of guest molecules.
