Dielectric properties of the binary system between cholesteryl propionate and cholesterol have been studied as a function of temperature and particularly of the concentration of cholesterol. According to the observation by a polarization microscope with crossed nicols and the measurement of dielectric constant vs. temperature, the characteristics as the liquid crystal of the cholesteryl ester became weaker by the addition of cholesterol. By dividing the dielectric loss into losses due to conductivity and those due to the relaxation phenomenon, the dielectric loss seems to be mainly due to the relaxation at the solid, and to the conductivity at liquid crystal and isotropic liquid. From the slope of the conductivity vs. the reciprocal of the absolute temperature, the activation energy of the electric conduction in each phase was obtained. On the basis of these results on dielectric properties, it has been concluded that the long-range order appears in the sulid phase below its melting point, and that this long-range order tends to disappear, while the short-range order is still maintained in the liquid crystal.
