The stem of Akebia quinata contains saponins. Twelve spots of these saponins were found by thin-layer chromatography, and named akeboside Sta, Stb, Stc, Std, Ste, Stf, Stg1, Stg2, Sth, Stj, and Stk. Akeboside Stb, Stc, Std, Ste, Stf, Sth, Stj, and Stk were isolated by column chromatography. Akeboside Stb is hederagenin bonded with arabinose ; Stc is hederagenin bonded with arabinose and rhamnose ; Std is hederagenin bonded with arabinose and glucose ; Ste is oleanolic acid bonded with arabinose, glucose, and rhamnose ; Stf is hederagenin bonded with arabinose, glucose, and rhamnose ; Sth is hederagenin bonded with arabinose, glucose, and rhamnose ; Stj is oleanolic acid bonded with arabinose, glucose, and rhamnose ; and Stk is hederagenin bonded with arabinose, glucose, and rhamnose. Akebosides Stg1 and Stg2 could not be separated, but seemed to be a mixture of oleanolic acid and hederagenin bonded with arabinose, glucose, and rhamnose.
