Aging trends and cluster formation of vacant houses and lots in a sloped urban area were revealed following three findings:
1. Vacant houses and lots are increasing, especially in poorly accessible hillside areas, leading to cluster formation.
2. After six years, the reuse of vacant properties significantly declines, and management conditions worsen.
3. Larger clusters tend to have poorer management, though partial maintenance at the periphery is sometimes observed as a countermeasure.
This study examined the construction background and residents’ lifestyles in MOJI-KO RETRO HEIMAT, yielding these findings:
1. MOJI-KO RETRO HEIMAT was constructed as the city’s first high-rise condominium with consideration for the scenic landscape of the tourist area, and conditions presented in landscape-related disputes have influenced its architectural planning.
2. Resident evaluations rate the views highest, followed by management, neighborhood, and exterior design, while the evaluation of unit livability is low.
3. Over half of surveyed residents have remodeled layouts, often expanding LDK spaces, creating varied living arrangements that reflect unit types and lifestyles.
Nichinan Town has been promoting compact town development by centralizing public utility facilities under the “Central Area Development Project.” This study aims to assess the effects and challenges of this consolidation and reorganization of public utility facilities, particularly within mountainous local governments. It examines population changes before and after the project’s implementation, the development and restructuring of public utility facilities, efforts to secure a transportation network between the central area and the old village districts, and the impacts on the old village districts from the perspective of facilities placement and the local community.
The need of sustainable technologies in today’s construction industry increased the interest of designers in traditional construction systems such as Japanese joinery, and this paper focused on analyzing the academic literature available online on this topic with a Systematic Mapping study. After investigating the type of research conducted and the contributing authors, the findings show that most of the papers are published in Japanese language and few of them are written in English. Also, the major focus of researches is on the structural properties of joints, with a growing trend on their development with computational design and digital fabrication processes.
This report aims to illustrate design attitude of Japanese architects by investigating design theories on building production in recent years. Firstly the contents of each design theory were analyzed. Secondly, design attitude of architects was analyzed from a viewpoint of two aspects ; one is the contents of the architect’s activity on building production, the other is the intention of the architect’s activity on building production. Consequently, several characteristic tendencies about design attitude of Japanese architects were founded by investigating the relationship between above two aspects.
Traditional private houses in the Ryukyu region have a semi-external space under the deep eaves called Amahaji. Along with its function of regulating the harsh natural environment, the daily life lived in the space characterise the traditional way of living in the houses. This study focuses on Amahaji and aims to clarify the characteristics of spatial transformation and persistence through retrofitting of traditional Ryukyuan houses. The characteristics of the renovation are extracted by recording present spatial configuration of the dwelling and the way it is used, and the past spatial configuration is analysed from the narratives of the inhabitants.
This study investigates the application of “relational design” in the C-TECs project at Nagoya University, a collaborative research space surpassing traditional laboratory boundaries. By analyzing the planning and operational processes, four key factors—shared crisis awareness, ideal alignment with active participation, flexible coordination mechanisms, and organizational culture transformation—were identified as critical to the project’s success. The results demonstrate how user-driven processes enhance spatial quality and institutional innovation. This research offers a new model for university facilities planning and underscores the importance of stakeholder engagement for sustainable outcomes.
Kyoto City has a historically formed alley culture that has been reevaluated. However, problems with road access regulations have made it difficult to repair, renovate, or properly maintain the back properties adjacent to these alleys, and leaving these properties abandoned has led to vacant houses and disaster prevention issues.
With this problem in mind, this study focused on “use” and analyzed how changes in use have affected road access and lot shape. As a result, it became clear that changes in social conditions and legal requirements have had a major impact on the transformation and disappearance of alley spaces.
This paper aims to clarify the actual situation of the relationship between outsiders and the local community in the Kawada area of Sabae city by analysing the activities of outsiders with craftsmen. The results are as follows.
1. Outsiders who have relationships with communities in traditional craft production areas through community activities are increasing.
2. Outsiders start new activities after being involved with the local community for several years.
3. Keeping outsiders in the community for a long time is important for developing human resources as bearer of regional activities.
In this study, interviews were conducted and analyzed using the Strategic Experiential Modules to identify the value created by the community garden “Yoshihisaen” that utilizes vacant lot and the factors that contribute to this value. As a result, the following five findings were obtained. (1) Creating opportunities for collaboration and interaction is important. (2) Working with students promotes residents' personal growth. (3) Hosting events and creating collaborative opportunities can provide value such as fun and improved relationships. (4) Balancing the diverse roles of participants will help sustain the community garden. (5) Community gardens foster student attachment to a place.
We develop a behavioral model for individuals walking home after a major earthquake and apply it to a wide-area simulation to estimate congestion levels on roads and at temporary accommodation facilities. Our analysis investigates the effectiveness of decentralized homeward movement in reducing congestion. Additionally, we simulate scenarios in which some railway lines are restored to assess congestion at railway stations. We also construct a detailed pedestrian network and perform a small-area simulation. Using a property damage model to simulate road blockages, we estimate pedestrian behavior around these obstacles and analyze how the abandonment of homeward travel affects congestion.
This study investigates the impact of excluding areas deemed unsuitable for habitation, such as physically hazardous regions, on the accuracy of population estimates within officially designated disaster-prone zones, including areas at risk of floods, tsunamis, or landslides. Population estimates were calculated by areal weighting interpolation using two spatial scales: district-level (Chocho-Aza and Kihon-tan-iku) and grid-level (500m grid units). The results indicate that excluding uninhabitable areas increases the estimated population exposed to potential disaster risks. Additionally, larger spatial units, which encompass more diverse land types, magnify the effects of excluding uninhabitable areas on population estimates.
The purpose of this paper is to conduct a visual impact assessment (VIA) of photovoltaic panels using landscape simulations of 3D urban model PLATEAU in the city center of Kyoto, based on landscape regulations and the operational standards of photovoltaic panels.
In Kyoto City the visual impact of photovoltaic panels with landscape simulations was found to be “low” or “negligible” which correspond to 76.3% of the 8 major sites (total 80 views). On the other hand, the visual impact was predicted to be “medium” at 21.3% of the views and “high” at 2.5% of the views.
This study analyzed the process and methods of notification system for demolition of Machiya in Kyoto and Kanazawa. (1)Kyoto City started the notification system of demolition referencing Demolition Delay Ordinance. Kanazawa City started the notification system referencing Kyoto City. (2)Kyoto City enacted the notification system because demolition is not subject of permit in Japan. The difference between the ordinance in Kyoto and Kanazawa is deadline of notification and threshold for review. (3)Other city administrations can bring in the same framework as Kyoto and Kanazawa. It is important to consider deadline of notification and threshold for review according to each city.
Aging of public facilities, declining population and increasing local government finance have been questioned. Many municipalities have developed comprehensive management plans for public facilities and individual facility plans, and are currently in the implementation phase of public facility reorganization. However, quantifying user needs and identifying what users find attractive is difficult, and a major issue for many municipalities is the inability to incorporate a user perspective into these plans and implementations.
The purpose of this study is to quantify the attractiveness of public facilities and reveal its determinants. Furthermore, we consider the potential application of the conclusions to actual plans.
This study focused on “planning” and examined the preservation of carpentry skills and the effectiveness of education through gaze measurement, motion measurement, and interviews. The experimental results showed that during plane adjustment, expert carpenters focused on the blade edge, while novices tended to focus on the striking point. During the planking operation, experts moved their gaze ahead of the plane, whereas novices focused on the plane itself. These results suggest that data collection through gaze and motion measurement is effective for the preservation of skills and the improvement of educational efficiency.
The purpose of this paper is to examine the characteristics of the building of the Crown Prince’s Temporary Palace, which was newly constructed in 1936 and destroyed by fire during an air raid in 1945.
The Crown Prince Akihito’s childhood residence, the Crown Prince’s Temporary Palace, and was designed with careful consideration given to its architectural structure, living environment, and disaster prevention measures. It also clarified its position among the Crown Prince’s Temporary Palace and Crown Prince’s Palace since the Meiji Era.
This article examined the construction process and construction period based on the construction process described in the “Rinji-Hatabako-toriatsukaijo-kenchikubu-kenchiku-ippan” published in March 1899. The following points become clear.
The site for the Hatabako-toriatsukaijo was acquired before the establishment of the Rinji-hatabako-toriatsukaijo-kenchikubu, and the design began after the establishment of the office. The total number of construction days was 356 days, and the actual architectural design period was 101 days. Most of the design work consisted of layout planning and construction cost estimates. The construction was completed in a relatively short period of time because the building was standardized.
This paper focuses on the changes of the facility layout plan to clarify the urban planning characteristics of the Ichinomiya Textile Wholesale District completed in 1971. In the stage from the original plan to the revised plan, the road plan, communal facilities in the center of the district, and the relationship between wholesale stores and the city were modified. In the final plan, it was confirmed that detailed adjustments were made while following the policy. As an urban planning characteristic, it was pointed that the centrality of the layout plan matched the characteristics of the project.
The Catholic Moji church, completed in 1930, was initiated by Fr. Martin of the Paris Foreign Missions and designed by master carpenter Kawahara Seiji. Its interior featured a flat ceiling elevated over the nave, deviating from the rib-vaulted ceilings typical of Japanese churches since the Meiji era. This shift reflected changing perceptions among Japanese Catholics and missionaries, particularly in rapidly developing cities, where flat ceilings gained acceptance. Financial constraints also influenced this design choice. Moji church exemplifies the changing architectural and cultural attitudes toward church design in Japan during the 1930s, marking a departure from traditional norms.
This study focuses on designs featuring multiple territories within a single room in contemporary Japanese houses. The purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of methods used to create a relationship between the territories in a single room and the territories that are related. The effects are categorized through the KJ method and their chronological transition are analyzed. The results showed that the effectiveness of the methods became more sophisticated as well as more diverse toward the present times.
The purpose of this research is to focus on Kiyoshi Seike and his representative work, “My House Complex,” and to clarify his thoughts on “dwelling” regarding his descriptions. His descriptions of “dwelling” reveals the characteristics of his discourses. Furthermore, the arrangement of the descriptions and drawings in chronological order enabled the classification of the evolution of the "my house complex" over half a century into seven stages. In terms of “family transition,” “building transition,” “sequencing,” and “succession,” he aimed to create good family relationships through flexible temporal and spatial transitions at different times.
Analyzed by its discrete and topological elements of the diagram, this paper reveals the principles in the poiesis of “Concret PH” and “Philips. Pavilion” by Xenakis. This paper elucidates the principle of the transformation from order towards disorder in the diagram of “Concret PH,” both in the discrete distribution of elements, which is based on the stochastic distribution, and spatial movements described by an identical diagram of “Philips Pavilion.” In addition, the topological isomorphism of the diagram reveals its archetype both in "Concret PH" and “Philips Pavilion,” correlating Xenakis’s creative process of music and architecture.
This paper is consisted of following three sections. 1st, the characteristics of the methods of shrine administration in Ebara-District through the document of the late-Edo period, before shrines were taken over by the state. 2nd, the changes of the ways shrines were managed in Ebara-District through comparing the documents in the early-Meiji period with one in the late-Edo period. 3rd, the impact on changes in shrine and temple precincts by the Shrine disposal by comparing precinct map from the late-Edo period with the early-Meiji period.
This article is comprised of the following 4 aspects.
1. Verifies the development of laws and systems related to leased lands in shrine precincts at the beginning of the Meiji period.
2. Grasps of the actual situation of leased lands in shrine precincts in Tokyo in the first half of the Meiji period through analyzing administrative documents held at the Tokyo Metropolitan Archives.
3. Clarifies the management structure on leased lands between the administration of Tokyo Prefecture and shrines.
4. Examines the significance of the leased land system in terms of repair costs of shrines and the park land system.
This study aims to determine the extent of the distribution of overlapping domical vault houses and to analyze how they are distributed in relation to the topography and traditional infrastructure in the Farah River basin. The study found 125 settlements with overlapping domical vault houses only on the Afghanistan side of the basin, representing 4.9 % of the total 2,559 settlements in the region. The settlements with overlapping domical vault houses were concentrated in the area near the citadels, which used to be a center of trade activities, in the lowland area closer to the river.
The devastating damage caused by the Gorkha Earthquake in 2015 and the urgent reconstruction afterward brought the drastic change on historic sites in the Kathmandu Valley in Nepal. The whole picture of the heritage rehabilitation has not been grasped yet, while the reconstruction works have been undertaken by the various stakeholders. In response to this situation, the study of the technical factors of heritage reconstruction focusing on the Buddhist monasteries in Patan explored architectural techniques that rely on community decision making process.
