The purpose of this study is to predict the influence of trees on airflow around buildings by using CFD. In order to analyze the air-flow around and through trees, the modeling of the aerodynamic effect of trees is required. Many plant canopy turbulence models have been developed in the past study of dendrology and agricultural meteorology. Almost all the models, however, were examined under horizontally homogeneous conditions. Using one- or two-dimensional computational domains, they have been developed for plant fields (e.g. corn fields, coniferous forests). In this study, airflow caused by an individual tree is estimated through three-dimensional calculations on these above models. The calculated airflow, compared with results of the wind-tunnel experiment, shows usefulness and limitations of the models, allowing for improvement of the model for analysis of airflow around an individual tree.
