    A method for analyzing the vibration transmission in building structure is proposed, in which FEM is strictly applied to the structure model composed of plates joined at right angles, in accordance with wave theory. As an application of the data of structural vibration obtained by this method, the problem of sound radiation in a room is analyzed in relation to the problem of impact sound of floor in buildings. The proposed method is discussed and verified in comparison with the data measured in an existing building for evaluation of the impact sound of floor. The measurement items are impedance of the slab, vibration transmission-loss and sound pressure level in the room.

    More than 50% of wooden frame houses in mild climate regions of Japan have not complied with 1992 energy conservation standard. Dwellers in such houses generally tend to employ intermittent and partial heating schedule. Thus partial renovations regarding thermal insulation for such houses are attractive in terms of cost-effectiveness for energy and environmental issue. This paper focuses on verification of thermal performances of a wooden frame house that the partial renovations regarding thermal insulation were implemented to around the living and the dining room. Indoor thermal environments and specific heat loss coefficients were measured on the renovated house. Also initial cost for the renovation and running cost for heating appliances were clarified in order to assess the cost-effectiveness for the partial renovations.
    The experimental results demonstrated that indoor thermal environments such as the temperature distributions against vertical direction, the globe temperature and the temperature variations were improved by the partial renovations. Furthermore, the specific heat loss coefficients analyzed from the experimental results indicated that seasonal heating load can be decreased approximately 30% in comparison with the former house without the partial renovations.

    In this paper, the influence of moisture sorption and desorption of walls on space conditioning load is evaluated by dynamic simulation based on detailed building physics taking account of heat and moisture transfer and airflow of whole buildings. Then sensitive analysis is performed with a number of factors, such as preset temperature and humidity of space conditioning, ventilation amount, property of interior materials and so on, which influence indoor humidity. Eleven factors that affect indoor humidity are defined with the extent of the influence by the multiple regression analysis on the basis of the sensitive analysis. It is clarified that the moisture sorption and desorption of walls are influence both heating and cooling load at a rate over 10 percent and water vapour permeance and moisture capacity of interior finish are the significant factor on the moisture sorption and desorption.

    Screens coated with photocatalyst were installed over a building in summer, and water was sprinkled over the screens. The installation of the screens designed to shade the solar radiation and sprinkling water over the screens can reduce the temperatures around the building and make the indoor thermal environment more comfortable. Temperatures at a mock-up were first compared, and measured in a 165.34 square-meter experimental building. Then, examination using the LESCOM simulation program was conducted. The measurement discovered that the indoor thermal environment was improved substantially. It was also found that figures gained from the measurement agreed well with those calculated from the LESCOM program.

    In order to design the indoor air quality on bio-aerosol appropriately, it is necessary to clarify the actual status of contamination caused by microbe such as bacteria and fungi in indoor environments. This report describes the results from an investigation of indoor environment, contamination state of a microbe by Andersen sampler, and Gram staining in a building. The main conclusions obtained from this research are as follows. (1) Moderate correlation was seen between airborne microbe concentration and indoor environment. (2) The airborne fungi concentration exceeded the academic standard value. (3) As a result of average aerodynamic diameter and Gram staining, airborne fungi concentration and species were easily affected by the outdoor air, but the outdoor air had little or no effect on the airborne bacteria.

    This paper reports the experimental results about the sterilization effect on microorganisms by ozone. The concept of “Exposure intensity (concentration x exposure period)”was proposed in this paper. The date obtained by this study suggested that the probability of survival shows the same value in case of same exposure of “exposure intensity”. For example, in order to obtain the rate of extinction 99% to the bacteria of E.coli exposure in the "exposure intensity" of 12 (ppm x min) is required. On the other hand, for the mold of A.niger, C. cladosporioides, and P. pinophilum, more than 90 (ppm x hr) are required. Furthermore, the required sterilization time corresponding to the ozone concentration in the spot will be obtained by use of the “Exposure intensity”.

    Sea breeze in summer is expected to mitigate urban heat island phenomena. However, to use the sea breeze as a countermeasure for the heat island, it is necessary to clarify the interaction between urban thermal environment and sea breeze. In this study, the sea breeze in summer around the Kanto Plane is imulated based on the mesoscale climate analysis. The inland penetration of sea breeze is well reproduced. Additionally, the mean kinetic energy balance model is proposed to estimate the structure of sea breeze. The balance is calculated from the numerical data provided by the simulation. Moreover, the mean kinetic energy balances of four areas in the Tokyo metropolitan are analyzed by using this method. From the results, it is clarified that the sea breeze is interrupted by the resistance and turbulence caused by buildings at the inter city. The interruption effect is increased by verticalization of urban structures.

    The performance value of cool painting is usually indicated by the solar reflectivity that is measured by spectrometer in the laboratory. It is not easy to measure insolation reflectivity of a painted surface accurately, for the reflectivity is influenced by the surroundings.
    In this study, it was examined that a method for insolation reflectivity measurement of horizontal cool painting surface using white and black board whose performance was known, and this validity was confirmed. It was found that the performance value using this method was able to be predicted within the error of approximately ±0.05. The fluctuation of the insolation reflectivity by the incident angle of the sun light was less influenced on prediction accuracy, if the measurement was done without a break.

    We have developed a simulation model to estimate the residential energy end-use in Japan. In this model, residential energy consumption is simulated taking into account the variety of the residents, housing insulation, and climate condition.
    With the use of this model, we estimated the domestic residential energy consumption of Japan in 2025, considering replacement of housing stock. For this purpose, we have improved the “Stock model of housing insulation efficiency”, that is able to estimate the distribution of building's insulation levels considering replacement of housing stock. By using the stock model, the effectiveness of measures related to housing insulation is also evaluated.

    The authors investigated bulk scalar coefficient (CE) of the street in the 3-D canopy with various conditions of arrangement, plan area density (λp), frontal area index (λf), and variability of model height in a wind tunnel using salinity method. The results can be summarized as follows.
    1) The relationships between CE and lf of both staggered and normal arrayed canopy with uniform height shows different tendency. The CE of 3-D canopy of staggered and normal pattern have similar value under the sparse (λf) and dense conditions, in contrast, CE of staggered canopy is higher than that of normal canopy under the condition of λf = 17.4%.
    2) CE of uniform canopy is larger than that of canopy with height variation under the condition of λf < 17.4%. In contrast, CE of uniform canopy is smaller than that of canopy with height variation under the condition of λf = 30.9%. Such a tendency is opposite to the result of drag force coefficient.
