Used-timber are discharged about 15 millions cubic meter every year from demolished buildings mainly from wooden houses in Japan. The authors have carried out a study on recycling used timber as wood-chip concrete. This Special concrete was made under following conditions, these were water-cement ratios: 35, 40, 50 and 60%, wood-chip packing ratios: 30, 40, 50 and 60%. The properties of the wood-chip of used timber crushed by hammer crusher were investigated. The injecting cement paste was made by the method called double mixing, and it was found that when the primary water cement ratio (W1/C) was chosen 23%, the bleeding and flowing speed of the cement paste could be minimized. Density of the wood-chip concrete can be controlled by the wood-chip packing ratio. These densities generally fall into the range of 920 kg/m^3 to 1250 kg/m^3. Bending strength test, compressive strength test were made to evaluate the properties of the wood-chip concrete. After these tests, the wood-chip concrete is suitable to use as building materials, for example, partition walls, floor joists, floor boards, etc.

It is very important to evaluate the relation between the specified design strength and the distribution of concrete strength in structural member. In this study, the distribution of concrete strength of core specimen cut from plain concrete columns was investigated and compared to the specified design strength of concrete which was estimated by several equations based on the compressive tests of reinforced concrete columns. The following results are obtained in experiment. (1) The core strength is not affected by the drilling direction of concrete. (2) The core strength shows the lower value at the top of concrete column. (3) The mean value of core strength cut from structural member is nearly equal to the specific design strength of concrete estimated from the compressive test result of reinforced concrete model columns.

Concrete specimens which are made from the same batch and cured in the same condition should present the same compressive strength independent of testing conditions. However it is known that measured compressive strength of normal strength concrete is affected by the dimensions of specimens. Experiments and finite element analyses were carried out to make clear the effect of the size, shape and height-diameter ratio of specimens on the mechanical properties of high strength concrete (HSC)in compression. Taking these effects into consideration, practical formulas were proposed and 10 φ×20cm was certified as optimum for compressive specimens of HSC.

In this thesis, the author investigates measurement and analytical methods used to measure the finishing accuracy (i.e., flatness and surface roughness) of concrete floor slabs. Through researches, developed a new measuring system to measure concrete surface profiles as well as a program that uses these profiles to isolate and analyze flatness and surface roughness. These techniques enable various types of surface roughness indices to be easily analyzed. The thesis presents overviews of the measuring system and analytical/measurement methods used as well as applied examples.

Almost similar method of mixing has been applied in various types of existing concrete mixers. Instead of mixing process, our new concept implies the kneading process to improve consistency. Lapping one half of the mix to the another half and then pressing it, by moving roller, to its original thickness is its main function. Application of compressive and shearing forces through roller movement and the minimized effect of gravity are its main advantages. This method enables concrete production with perfectly even consistency, in which the constituents of concrete are uniformly distributed. This new concept is verified through experiments; and the advantages of the new mixer over existing mixers are examined by making comparison.

This paper presents basic evaluation method of floors at touch by feet with a high degree of accuracy. First, sences of warmth, roughness and hardness were inferred as factors to evaluate floors at touch by feel, and evaluation scale and each sensory scales are made. Next, 3 physical quantities which express each of the factors were established, referring to each sensory scale. Finally, an evaluation fomula was made by a complex of 3 physical quantities, which corresponded to evaluation scale. As mentioned above, evaluation method of floors at touch by feet was suggested on Limited condition.

In this paper, I used a beam model on an elastic foundation in which finish material is treated as a beam and a structure body treated as an elastic foundation to evaluate quantitatively craking and segregating of finish materials caused by difference of thermal expansion or drying shrinkage between a structure body and a finish. Feature of this analysis method is dealing of interaction between horizontal and vertical deformation due to the fact that position of horizontal spring is not at neutral axis but at lower side of a beam.

To detect the local damage of multi-storey buildings, an efficient method using random vibration measurement is presented. First of all, the change in modal properties due to damage is identified from ambient vibration time series by a multivariate ARMA model. Then, the damaged storeys containing damaged members are extracted from the whole structural system in terms of the change in curvature of mode shapes. Lastly, the location of damaged members is pinpointed and the extent of damage is quantitatively evaluated within the damaged storeys in terms of the change in member stiffness and damping by an inverse perturbation method with weighted least squares technique, taking account of uncertainties of identified modal properties. To verify the applicability of the scheme, a series of shaking table tests of a multi-storey building model have been performed. Based on the results identified by using random data from the vibrational experiment, the effectiveness and limitation of the damage detection scheme is discussed.

An implicit integration scheme, which is based on the initial stress method and is applicable to the Substructure On-line Test (SOT), is proposed in this paper, and numerical algorithm for SOT is built up according to the scheme. Energy effect of unbalance force, which is induced due to a limited number of iteration and is referred to as the residual error, on stability and accuracy of the scheme is rigorously investigated. Numerical experiments, in which restoring force for experimental subassemblage is simulated by the fiber method, on single degree of freedom system, two degrees of freedom system and multi degrees of freedom system of frame model, are conducted, and validities and issues of the algorithm formulated on the basis of the proposed scheme are discussed.

堆積盆地状の不整形地盤の短周期地動に及ぼす地層境界の形状、地層インピーダンス比、入力地震波動の種別、及び、堆積盆地内地盤を伝播する表面波等の諸要因の影響を吟味する目的で、厚さ300m〜100m、幅10kmで地層境界が余弦関数で表せる不整形地盤(タイプ1)と、その大部分が軟弱な水平盛層地盤で両端部が傾斜した地層境界で閉じられた不整形地盤(タイプ2)の二つの2次元の堆積盆地状の不整形地盤モデルを設定し、平面SH波入射による地動応答を境界積分方程式法により振動数8Hzまで精度良く求めた。 Ricker waveletを入力とした場合のタイプ2の盆地内地動応答には後続位相がみられるが、これを傾斜した地層境界により誘発されるLove波と特定した。卓越振動数が4Hzと6Hzの人工地震波を作成し、それによる地動応答を評価した結果、タイプ2の地動応答はタイプ1のそれより、両端の傾斜地層境界より誘発される表面波(Love波)の影響により、より複雑で継続時間が長くなることや、その最大応答は盆地中央部よりも傾斜地層境界近傍で、比較的高い振動数で起こる傾向があることなどを明らかにした。

In our previous study, the applicability of the fuzzy hysteretic response control to structures in the range of strong nonlinearity was analytically and experimentally confirmed. In this paper, the practically of the fuzzy elasto-plastic response control was discussed using an analytical method which can almost exactly simulate the results of the hysteretic response control tests executed by the authors. The optimum values of the parameters for hysteretic response control was suggested from a practical point of view and it was confirmed that these values produced efficient response control during earthquakes ranging from slight tremors to strong shakings.

In this paper, two analysis models, a uniform shear warping model and a nonuniform shear warping model for the thin-walled beam's flexural behavior are developed, which can show the precise distribution of normal stress and shear stress within the beam section including the shear lag phenomena. The mechanism of boundary condition of the developed shear warping models and their relation for the Timoshenko's beam model are discussed and clearly verified. By using the St. Venant's semi-inverse method, the uniform and nonuniform warping functions are defined. By two examples, the usefulness of the proposed analysis model is shown.

In general, a bolted joint system has been applied to the joints of long-span wooden structures in many cases. As the wooden members are fastened with several bolts at each joint and looseness exists between the bolt and bolt's hole, the state of connection is neither rigid nor pin connection. In this paper, judging from our several experimental studies on a wooden singlelayer space frame that had already been examined, the authors discussed the influence of a bolted joint looseness with an axial and a bending resistance. Furthermore, the authors suggested that a bolted joint looseness should be substituted an axial and a bending rigidity in the analytical model.

The authors propose a new approach for fracture problems in the field of concrete engineering by the discrete element method (DEM). The DEM can be applied to a series of behavior of materials from continuous to discontinuous state. The DEM is suited to simulate fracture behavior such as crack, crush, slide, separation etc. of media. In this paper, the simulation analyses by the DEM are performed for uniaxial compression test, splitting tensile test of concrete cylinder and impact test on reinforced concrete slabs, and also some analytical investigations are made on the fracture characteristics of concrete structures.

The main objectives of the present experimental investigation are to study the bond strength of steel, spiral sheaths for a precast concrete system and to compare the bond behaviors of sheaths with those of deformed bars which have similar diameters to the sheath diameter. To achieve, these objectives, 56 specimens of a full scale section of beams or columns were tested with a constant bonded length. The influences of the following parameters on the bond strength were studied: height of the lug (rib) of sheath, sheath diameter, casting depth, thickness of the cover concrete, amount of the lateral reinforcement, loading history and size of the deformed bar. The test results showed that the system bar-mortar-sheath behaves as a unit. Also that the bond behavior of sheath is almost similar to that of deformed bars with the same diameter to the sheath

The predicting method of local damage in reinforced concrete plate with absorber sandwiched between two concrete panels(double-layered RC plate) under the impact of hard projectile is studied in this paper. The results of high-velocity impact tests to investigate the impact resistance of double-layered RC plates are reported. To evaluate quantitatively the extent of local damage, the existing formulae and the alternative predicting formulae with the multivariate analysis presented here are employed. The prediction of the proposed formulae can agree reasonably well with the actual observed damage, thus can be a useful method in impact resistant design.

Recently, studies on seismic energy isolation and damping structures abound and a number of attenuation mechanisms have been proposed. One of them proposes to utilize the elasto-plastic hysteresis of steel, using low yield strength steel as material. This study conducted low-cycle fatigue tests to clarify the low-cycle fatigue characteristics, hysteresis characteristics and energy absorption characteristics of low strength steel. Low-cycle fatigue characteristics of low yield strength steel were reported. In this paper the following conclusions were obtained concerning hysteresis and hystersis energy characteristics. 1. Hystersis curve characteristics of low yield strength steel (1) The effect of strain rate on the yield strength is considerable. Particularly, the upper yield strength increases markedly. (2) In the б_<max>-cycle relationship, the stress amplitude is more or less constant. However, a) the LYP 235 tends to soften by repetition while b) the LYP 100 to harden by repetition. (3) The hysteresis curve can be approximated by the Kato-Akiyama model. 2. Hysteresis energy of low yield strength steel (1) The hysteresis energy-cycle relationship shows a similar tendency to the б_<max>-cycle relationship. The effect of strain rate decreases as the number of cycles increases. (2) Within the strain amplitude range of ε_1 >0.8%, the cumulative energy absorption characteristics of low yield strength steel up to fracture vary by steel type. SS400 and LYP235 are superior to pure iron and LYP 100. (3) Within the strain amplitude range of ε_1<0.7%, the hysteresis energy of low yield strength steel is much greater than of ordinary steel (nul for ordinary steel), and low yield strength steel has excellent energy absorption characteristics.

Lateral buckling of H-shaped beams often represents a limiting factor in their bending performance. Consideration of this becomes increasingly more important when the engineer designs the structure members. In this paper, we propose a new method to improve a lateral buckling strength of H-shaped beam. The method is to add the torsional stiffening device as the steel pipe to the web of H-section. This enables to increase torsional rigidity and lateral buckling strength greatly. We clarified quantitatively the effect of this device to lateral buckling behavior by the results of experiments and theoretical analysis.

In this report, the plastic deformation behavior of H-shaped beam restrained on upper flange is discussed. First, from the examination of numerical buckling analysis, the effect of upper flange restraint for several buckling mode is described. And for the purpose of estimating more exactly the general slenderness ratio using as parameter for the plastic deformation capacity recently, the effect factor (function) of upper flange restraint that is obtained from approximation of the numerical analysis results is presented. Next, from the examination with the elastic plastic large displacement analysis for upper flange restrained or non-restrained H-shaped beam, the effect of upper flange restraint for clastic deformation behavior is explained. And the relationship between the general slenderness ratio and plastic deformation capacity is investigated. Last, the point to notice to estimate the plastic deformation capacity from the general slenderness ratio is discussed.

A series of loading tests on H-shaped beams with lap joints is conducted in order to investigate the effect of these joints on inelastic behavior of the beams. Results indicate that deformation capacity of such beams is greater than prediction based on the assumption that the joint area is completely rigid. A non-linear analytical method for calculating the load-deformation relationship of the beams is developed based on the equilibrium and compatibility relationships between stub and strip elements divided at the location of bolts. The theory and test results are in good agreement and it is shown that the ratio of joint deformation to total deformation is considerably large when the beam is short.

Three 2 bay - 2 storey unbraced steel frames connected with semi-rigid connection were tested. The obtained load-drift angle relationship of each frame is stable spindle type with satisfactory deformation capacity regardless of the difference of the failure mode. The effect of the semi-rigid action of the connection on the structural behaviours of the frame is analyzed by using the rotational spring model for the connection.

This report proposes a systematizing method for "Design-Knowhow" on assuming member sections. "Design-Knowhow" consists of "general knowledges", "experienced explicit knowledges" and "experienced implicit knowledges". "General knowledges" and "experienced explicit knowledges" are easy to systematize by explicit logic, but "experienced implicit knowledges" are difficult. In this report, "experienced implicit knowledge" are acquired by neural network, and "Design-Knowhow" is systematized by integrating with other knowledges. From the result of the verification, neural network is proved to be effective to acquire "experienced implicit knowledges".

In the statistical analysis of annual extreme winds due to typhoons, the author used the Gumbel distribution to obtain mean recurrence values of 50, 100 and 500 years of wind speeds at all weather stations considered in the paper. The first part of question is concerned with the selection of probability distributions; according to the re-examination of the wind speed data given by the author, the Weibull distribution seems more appropriate. The second part is related to a portion of conclusions; although the use of annual extreme wind data due to typhoons rather than mixed winds is recommended in order to avoid underestimating mean recurrence wind speeds, at several stations where the skewness factor is small mixed winds result in larger or almost equal 500-year wind speeds when the Weibull distribution is employed.

The author thanks Seiichi Tasaka for his discussion, and the answers are as follows; (1) The location parameter, the upper limit, of the Weibull distribution depends on its skewness. The skewness is strongly influenced by the largest and/or the smallest extremes. Then the Weibull distribution may be not adequate for estimating extreme values at the far outer range of an observed period. (2) The annual maximum wind speeds caused by typhoons may be suitable for estimating the design wind speed for a long range since typhoon winds are likely to produce extraordinary values which yield large standard deviations.

Several questions are presented on the crack initiation criterion and the mechanical properties of cold-formed box-section columns. Major points are as follows: 1) Why was such unreliable material as cold-formed steel employed to the sensitive investigation on crack initiation?; 2) There is a serious contradiction on the crack initiation criterion between the statement in this paper and the formerly known test result; 3) No witness is shown on the important inference that the crack initiation is governed by the rupture strain pertinent to the material.

Our opinions are not consistent with Kuwamura's on the following points: 1) The skeltemized stress-strain curve under complicated loading reversals does not coincide with the stress- strain curve under monotonic loading; 2) The crack initiation condition at the surface of a cold-formed rectangular steel tube's corner depends on the medianical property of the whole section of the corner portion: 3) Due to the lack of sufficient techniques for measuring large strain, the experiments on structural members cannot be executed so accurately as to discus about the crack initiation strain on the skeIetonized stress-strain curve.
