This paper describes new producing method of flowing concrete by using of powdered superplasticizer(PS) packed in paper material rapidly decomposable in fresh concrete (PS A). Solubility of PS in fresh concrete .composition of paper material, influence of PSA to the concrete properties were studied and field investigations were carried out. The results are as follows: The solubility of PS in fresh concrete was much improved by adding with silica fume to PS. The paper material made from 20wt% of carboxymethyl cellulose and 80wt% of pulp was suitable for packing PS. There was little difference between the properties of the flowing concrete added with PSA and those of the one added with liquid superplasticizer. In the field investigation, the properties of the flowing concrete added with PSA in truck agitators were mostly within the standard value of JASS-5. Consequently, the flowing concrete added with PSA is able to be used practically.

In this paper the rheological properties and the effects of proportions of constituent materials on the fluidity and segregation rate of two types of high fluidity concrete specified as mineral and viscosity concrete were investigated. The results of this investigation indicate that each type of concrete differs in rheological properties.lt also indicates that.the variation in proportions of constituent materials affects the rheological constants,fluidity,and segregation rate. The results further indicate that depending on the type of concrete,there is a proper range of rheological constants for an appropriate and well mix designed concrete.

Cement paste specimens with different types of cement were prepared under the different drying conditions and the porosities were measured by the mercury porosimetry. The relations between the compressive strength and the static modulus of elasticity of the specimens were measured and the relations with the porosity were applied to Ryshkevich's and Springs's equations. These equations were good applicability to the experimental results. And, in comparison with the results of Gilkey, the rate of increase of the compressive strength of air-cured specimen after immersing water became larger. The mechanical properties of concrete with various type of cement can be determined by their porosities of the cement paste, which has of practical importance.

MY-BOX is the newly developed continues mixer based on the new kneading theory, proposed by authors. This mixer satisfies the kneading theory to from 2 n layers when materials passing through its number of mixing units. In order to examine the performance of this mixer, it was used to mix the dredging sludge with cement, which would be applied to improve the soil condition in the sea port. By comparing test results, it is come to the point that the use of this type of continuous mixer would greatly simplify the complex mixing system by securing the similar result as that of the conventional mixing method.

This paper aims at clarifying the general properties of ultraviolet (UV) ray reflection of building materials. Firstly, we analyze UV ray reflection photo of building and landscapes in an university campus. It is observed that the intensity of UV ray reflection varies among materials. Secondly, we measured reflection intensity and ratio of UV ray for 42 specimens of building materials, and then classified those materials into 6 groups using multidimensional scaling method. The findings show that the UV ray reflection properties depend largely on the absorption ratio of U V ray and on the shape and roughness of material surfaces.

A generation method of the input time history which causes the largest response to MDOF is proposed. Parameters of the narrow frequency band wave with linear phase property for each mode are determined so that the maximum response occurs when the maximum response of each mode occurs at the same time. The critical wave generated by this method causes much larger ductility factor than those caused by waves with random phases for 2-DOF system, 3-DOF system and 6-DOF system with various yield shear force coefficient distributions.

P to S converted waves generated at the surface of seismic bedrock are useful for estimating deep underground structures, because the difference in arrival time between P to S converted waves and direct P waves, that is, PS-P time depends only on velocity structures of sedimentary layers overlying the seismic bedrock. This paper investigates the applicability of receiver function method proposed by Langston to detect PS-P time from observed records of medium or small earthquakes. The receiver function is obtained by Fourier inverse transform of spectral ratio function of horizontal to vertical component in the P-wave part. By analyzing records observed at three sites, it is confirmed that the receiver function can detect PS-P time accurately, and is applicable to seismograms which do not have any noticeable phase of P to S converted waves. It is indicated that PS-P time has good correlation with periods of fundamental mode of S- and surface waves.

For seismic microzoning on damage of wooden houses, the vulnerability functions of wooden houses should be defined. In this study, the vulnerability functions for different construction age are proposed using the damage survey data in Higashinada, Kobe area during the 1995 Hyogo-ken Nanbu, Japan earthquake. The proposed vulnerability functions are applied at five strong-motion stations in Kobe where the main shock records are available. The estimated damage rates agree well with the observations, suggesting the validity of the proposed functions. By using the proposed functions together with populations of wooden houses estimated from the Grid-Square Statistics data and peak ground velocities computed for a hypothetical earthquake, a procedure for seismic risk mapping of wooden houses is shown. The procedure is applied to the northern part of Kanagawa-prefecture.

Discussed in this paper is the vertical load supporting mechanism of laminated rubber bearings with hollow circular sections. The compressive stiffness of the hollow circular rubber bearings is analytically studied. Key issues discussed in this paper are 1) derivation of the governing equation that determines the compressive stiffness of the device 2) effect of bulk modulus on the compressive stiffness 3) proposition of a simple formula which is close to the rigorous solution. As a result of this analytical study, the compressive stiffness of the rubber bearings is proved to be 20 % smaller than is expected from the commonly used conventional model.

In a design of a thick RC slab such as a basemat of a nuclear reactor building, the design method as same as for RC column is usually used. In this method, bending moment and axial force which are obtained by linear Finite Element Method (FEM) for external force are considered. But the assumption for linear FEM in which concrete participates for tensile stress is different from that for reinforcement design in which concrete does not participate for tensile stress. This difference of the assumption results that in-plane tensile strain at the center of the slab depth in the reinforcement design is larger than that in linear FEM. Some effects will appear in stress distribution if this tensile strain is constrained by boundary condition. In this paper, a practical method to evaluate the boundary constrain effects for this in-plane tensile strain is proposed and a simulation analysis of a thick reinforced concrete slab with a large opening for out-of-plane force is also reported.

An analytical method on vertical load-settlement relations of single pile is proposed based on the difference equations in consideration of nonlinear characteristics on vertical stress-strain of pile, frictional stress-settlement and point load-point settlement. A method of formulation on the relation between frictional stress and settlement is also proposed made up from shear stressstrain relation of soil. Then the procedure of analysis is mentioned on the model of bored steel pipe pile in sand ground. The results of the analysis express the behavior of pile rationally and accurately.

The pseudo-dynamic tests using a torsional shear test apparatus were conducted to investigate more appropriate measure of earthquake ground motions for evaluating liquefaction potential of subsurface sand layers. The tests results on three kinds of sands indicated that the maximum relative velocity was a more appropriate measure for evaluating the intensity of earthquake ground motions at occurrence of liquefaction than .the maximum absolute acceleration which has commonly been used, and that the excess pore water pressure developed in the ground correlated better with maximum relative velocity and the spectrum intensity than the maximum absolute acceleration. These results agreed fairly well with previous findings on the basis of strong ground motion observations.

Equations to estimate strength and deformation characteristics of confined concrete are investigated through discussions on our previous study. Main results obtained are as follows. (1) Equations to calculate strength and deformation characteristics of confined concrete are derived irrespective of strength of constituting materials and configurations of transverse reinforcement. (2)A method for predicting stress-strain relations of confined concrete using charts which express effects of factors on the strength and deformation characteristics is presented. (3) From examinations of feasibility, the induced equations show more successful applicability to test results than other privios equations.

During the 1995 Hyogoken-Nanbu Earthquake, a reinforced concrete building, called Jeunesse Rokko, suffered intermediate damage by forming a beam-yielding mechanism, which has been regarded as the most desirable earthquake resisting mechanism throughout the world. Nonlinear earthquake response analyses with the observed earthquake record were conducted to simulate the behavior of the building during the earthquake. The results were compared with the observed structural damage concerning the location of yield hinges, compression failure of spandrels, degree of shear cracking in columns, and the distribution of the damage in beam-column joints. The effect of nonstructural elements on the earthquake response was also studied.

Systematic tests on the shear behavior of prestressed concrete beams were performed in order to clarify the shear carrying mechanism. On the basis of the test results an analytical approach based on a lower boundary theorem using a truss and arch model was proposed , for predicting the ultimate shear behavior of prestressed concrete beams. Comparison of test results obtained from 147 test beams with the analytical results were made in terms of the ultimate shear strength.

In order to investigate the effects of bolt-hole arrangement and edge distance of bolted joints on the ultimate tensile strength of joint plates and failure modes, we conduct tension tests of the steel plates jointed with high-strength bolts. We propose formulas to predict the ultimate strength of the joint plates for three failure modes: net section fracture, tearing fracture and end fracture. The experimental results confirm the validity of the formulas. In addition, the experimental results are compared with the design values specified in the "Standard for Limit State Design of Steel Structure (draft)" (Architectural Institute of Japan) and the "Load and Resistance Factor Design Specification for Structural Steel Buildings" (American Institute of Steel Construction). Furthermore, relationships between the failure modes and the geometric properties of the bolt-hole arrangements are clarified: In the tests, three types of steels of 400MPa-grade steel, 590MPa-grade and 780MPa-grade high-quality steels are adopted.

H shaped beam-to-box column connections have been ordinary fabricated by the welding method with interior diaphragms. In this method, there are some problems on their fabrication and structural behavior, because of the complication regarding the details of the welding connections. Therefore, the authors proposed a new bolted connecion with split tees and blind bolts, and have already understood the tensile behavior of the beam-to-box column connection. In this paper, the structural behaviors of four cruciform frame specimens using the new connection method were investigated experimentally. The test results were compared with a specimen with the ordinary diaphragms, and were analyzed by the box rahmen method that assumes a box rahmen for column section based on beam theory. From these discussions, the following conclusions were derived on condition that the beam-to-colmun connection is properly strengthened to diminish out-of-plane deformation of the column flange . a) The stiffness, the strength, and the deformation capacity of the specimens with the new connection are equivalent or superior to those of the specimen with the ordinary diaphragm. b) For this new connection, only local tensile deformation occures at the tensile part, because the stiffness of the compression side increases due to the tight-fastening of the split tee and the column flange by blind bolts. Therefore, local deformation affects little the frame deformation. c) Load and local displacement curves of the connection and the frame can be simulated generally by the box rahmen method.

This paper presents the results of an experimental work carried out to study the strength and behavior of circular steel tubular beam-columns under constant vertical and varying horizontal loads. Diameter-to-thickness ratios and axial load ratios are selected as main test parameters. From the test results, the effects of local buckling and the existence of vertical load on the strength and behavior of the beam-columns are discussed. Moreover, the column strength formula for the plastic design is compared with the test results to check the validity for tubular beamcolumns.

In this paper, a new experimental method of the full scale shaking table test is proposed and verified. The main feature of this method is characterized -by the use of the inertial loading equipment. Thus, inertia force generated in the loading mass supported by isolators is applied to the specimen. The shaking table is one of the biggest shaking tables in the world, and it is possible to apply lOOkine velocity to 200ton of the weight. So, using this experimental method, a full scale and real time dynamic shaking of structural elements up to their collapse state is possible to carry out.

A numerical method for elastic-plastic buckling analysis of concrete-filled tubular columns with hollow circular section is presented. The elastic-plastic tangent stiffness matrix in the method is constructed by using the tangent coefficient matrix obtained by the numerical integration of the handening moduli of the fibers about the member section to calculate the generalized plastic strain increments. The assumptions that a column deforms in a body and behaves according to the Bernoulli-Euler hypothesis are made in the analysis. The accuracy of the method is examined by comparing the results with available experimental results.

This paper presents a basic knowledge on the Column Overdesign Factors (COF) for forming the weak-beam type of plastic mechanisms in Steel Reinforced Concrete (SRC) frames. In order to evaluate the requirement of the COF, a nonlinear dynamic response analysis was carried out, in which the degradation of interstory rigidities (negative rigidities) was rigorously taken into account. The concluding remarks are; (1) the large COF prevents a frame model from forming the interstory plastic mechanism and also disperses the plastic hinges in the frame; and (2) the encased steel shapes and the lateral reinforcements in columns are effective to reduce the requirement of the COF.

The purpose of this study is to obtain basic data for developing reliable methods for evaluating the fire resistance of continuous fiber reinforced concrete beams. Methods for predicting deflections at high temperatures of fiber reinforced concrete beams are discussed on the basis of the tensile properties at high temperatures and characteristics values of different types of continuous fiber reinforcing bars. The study concludes that deflections of continuous fiber reinforced concrete beams under high-temperature loading can be calculated with relative ease.
