This paper describes the results of experimental study on workability, mechanical properties, carbonation of concrete substituting fly-ash for cement less than 45% in hot weather. We obtained the following results. 1. Using fly-ash in hot weather could be more workability of concrete and could be more increasing compressive strength of concrete than that of non fly-ash. 2. We presented the curing period and the time to remove forms of concrete with 35℃ and 20℃. 3. The carbonation was greater as the replacement ratio of fly-ash became higher, but the carbonation of hot weather concreating was less than that of general weather concreating.

In order to clarify the effects of pozzolanic reaction of fly ash on the rate of carbonation of high-volume concrete, the carbonation depth, the compressive strength, the pore structure and the amount of Ca(OH)_2 were investigated experimentally. As a result, it was found that the rate of carbonation of the concrete was not influenced by the addition of fly ash with a specific particle size and shaved a good correlation only with the water cement ratio. However, the addition of fly ash with the smaller or the larger particle size showed a positive (negative) or a negative (positive) effect on the resistance to carbonation, depending on the water cement ratio. Consequently, the resistance to carbonation of high-volume fly ash concrete is determined by both the reduced permeability of the matrix and the decreased pH due to the Pozzolanic reaction of fly ash.

In order to study the influence of trowel finishing specifications on surface strength of floor concrete, we measured the abrasion and scratch resistance of floor concrete samples finished by several specifications. As a result, we showed some instances of different surface strength of floor concrete caused by differences of finishing specifications despite the same mix proportion. And we studied the relationship between quantity of absorbed surface water and penetration resistance at the time of finishing and surface strength, and showed the possibility of the presence of the best finishing time in surface strength and of making a judgement of the best finishing time by the quantity of absorbed surface water.

Thermal degradation environment in outdoor exposure test is monitored by black panel temperature. Eleven types of black panel thermometers(BPT) and black standard thermometers(BST) incruding specified ones by JIS, ISO, ASTM and DIN were exposed at an angle of south/30 degrees in Tsukuba to be compared their thermal susceptibility with those of other thermometers. BPTs specifeied by JIS, ASTM and DIN are compatible, but BST/JIS(ISO) is higher than BST/DIN. As thermal degradation rate based on BPT insulated back-side is quitely greater, an accelerated natural outdoor exopusure test will be performed by using an insulated exposure rack.

The purpose of this study is to consider on slipperiness of floors from a viewpoint of fatigue occurring after long term physical activity. The first, it was cleared that the psychological scales about fatigue which were made by sensory tests corresponded to the slip resistance of floors measured by the apparatus which was developed in previous study. The next, the relationships between fatigue and slipperiness was considered with biomechanical and physiological parameters. As a result, we presented the fact that slipperiness of floor was very important factor and presented the suitable slip resistance from a viewpoint of fatigue.

Performance overtime of membrane materials for membrane structure has prominent important role as a front line of defence barrier between inner and outer space of the structure. This paper deals with the results of ten years out door exposure tests for PVC coated polyester fabrics, intended to obtain much practical and applicable performance data for design for durability or service life prediction of membrane structure. It could be conducted that behaviour of degradation in time, especially, tensile and tear strength are comparatively critical in view of structural safety aspect and this could be applicable as performance based test data for setting service life of the membrane structures and also setting some measures for maintenance operation.

Effects of surface roughness on adhesion between epoxy resin floor coatings and cement mortar substrate were discussed. First surface roughness and waviness of various cement mortar substrate which were abraded through various abrasive papers were measured. Second, peel energy was measured. In stead of cement mortar substrate, the gypsum replicas were used in the measurement for avoiding an influence of wide variety of surface free energy of cement mortar substrate. The peel energy between the gypsum replicas and epoxy resin floor coatings was discussed. It was found out that peel energy closely related to the surface roughness of substrate, and an increase of surface roughness was effective in improving adhesion between the substrate and the coatings.

Three-dimensional shaking table tests were carried out for a new base-isolation system of a lightweight building with a mat foundation. The new system uses resin balls between the mat and an under-mat reinforced concrete slab. A type using fiber-reinforced cement boards and phenol resin balls caused a load concentration in its virgin state and amplified its response in case of a small input. Another type with layers of polystyrene foam, the cement board, polystyrene balls and the cement board absorbed relative unevenness between the moving mat and the under-mat slab and decreased its acceleration under about 40 cm/sec^2.

Recently, many kinds of passive energy dissipation systems have been used for reducing seismic response of building frames in seismic design. Among them, viscoelastic dampers dissipate seismic input energy depending on their deformations and velocities. Therefor, it is important to estimate accurately deformations and velocities of dampers in determining analytical model. A series of dynamic response analyses are carried out using simple or accurate types of modeling for a 100m height steel frames. This paper presents a comparison of differences caused by modeling technique and effects of damper quantity and horizontal locations on seismic performance. A simplified calibration method of analytical model based on effective damper deformations is also proposed.

This paper addresses the use of nonlinear system identification in the mechanical modeling of a high-damping rubber damper. The model consists of one linear spring, two linear dashpots, and one nonlinear spring in order to represent the amplitude- and frequency-dependent properties of the damper. The mechanical properties of the linear spring and two dashpots are determined from the test results by using the nonlinear system identification technique. The restoring force characteristic of the nonlinear spring is formulated by incorporating a versatile hysteresis model. The validity of the model is shown by comparing the test results with the analytical results via the model. Seismic response analyses are carried out for a building with the high-damping rubber dampers using the model, and this demonstrates their effectiveness.

A series of shaking-table tests of a scaled soil-pile-building model were performed in order to study the effects of the plastic deformation of soil on dynamic characteristics of the soil-pile-building interaction system. The elasto-plastic material for model ground was made by Plasticine, whose strain dependency of the stiffness and the damping are similar to those of clayey soils. The input motion is 1968 Hachinohe EW and its maximum accelerations were set to be 100,300 600 cm/s^2 at the shaking table. Results show the average maximum strain of soil became from 0.0018 to 0.018 and the natural frequency and the amplification factor decrease by 28% and 39%, respectively. Dynamic response analyses, which combined the mass-spring model (SR model) having swaying and rocking spring and dashpots located at the foundation of the building and an equivalent linearization method, were carried out. The difference in the natural frequency obtained by the test and analyses were within 5% and those of maximum acceleration at the building are within 10%.

This paper describes the control characteristics of the Active Variable System (AVS) system applied to a high-rise building. The AVS system controls the structural stiffness to establish non-resonant states against large earthquakes. In practical viewpoints, 10% damping factor produced by variable stiffness devices is introduced to three selectable stiffness types. The non-resonant control gives smallest responses in uncontrolled three stiffness types, thus producing significant response reduction especially for earthquakes with narrow-range long-period component. The control also reduces input energy of earthquakes, so it realizes effective control with small amount of energy absorption of the variable stiffness devices.

This paper proposes the technique for the following two analyses : an analysis on stresses induced in structural members undergoing finite displacements and expressed in the form of an increment based on the kinematical and statical relation equations of the whole space truss, and a bifurcation buckling analysis under stability conditions. The proposed analyticaltechnique is explicit to develop a theory and easy to structure an algorithm, though it increases the total number of numericalcalculations to prepare tangential stiffness matrices. Two space truss domes, in which simple and dual bifurcation points arise on an equilibrium path, are taken as example numerical analyses to check the validity of the technique.

Method of mixing soil with stabilizing material has been widely used in the works such as ground improvement, pile formation, and construction of temporary structure. The obtained mixed body is generally treated as possessing a certain strength regardless of scatter in value. It is important to understand how much they are homogeneous under the established construction method. To estimate the quality of mixed body quantitatively, electric resistibility logging was carried out before hardening. the scatter observed in resistibility with depth was discussed.

Classical Winkler Model has often been used for static soil-structure interaction analyses. The model has some shortcomings because of the discontinuity of adjacent spring displacements. Pasternak Model was proposed as an improved soil model and applied for the static analysis of an elastic continuum on a rigid base in an axisymmetric condition. The characteristics of Pasternak Model were evaluated by comparing the displacements of Pasternak Model with those of the finite element analysis. The ground surface displacements were explicitly formulated in case of uniformly distributed vertical circular loads for practical use.

In the present paper, the effect of the geometrical initial imperfections on the buckling load of rigidly jointed single-layer latticed domes is investigated. The imperfection is assumed to be the similar shape of the first elasto-plastic buckling mode obtained form the elasto-plastic buckling analysis, and it is given only in the vertical direction at each node of the dome. As a result, the elasto-plastic buckling laod of the domes is estimated by using Modified Dunkerley Formulation as a function of λs or Λ with the knock-down factor γ. Here, it is shown that the curve of the buckling load of the domes is defined as a function of the amplitude of the imperfection.

The collapse characteristics of a single-layer shallow latticed dome under vertical dynamic excitation is investigated from the point of view of the absorbed energy. Both static and dynamic analyses are Performed taking into account the geometrical and material nonlinearities. By comparing the collapse characteristics under the dynamic excitation and the static distributed loads which are proportional to vibration modes, it is shown that the absorbed energies at the collapse state under both static and dynamic excitations are limited, and that the maximum absorbed energies are different with different vibration modes. This latter is a particular characteristic for the latticed dome which is distinguished from that for the plate-type space frame.

Cylindrical shell tanks with water on a shaking table driven with sinusoidal excitation show various nonlinear responses. In order to make clear some causes of the response, we have been examining the system on both theoretical and experimental aspects. Here, basing upon experimental vibration tests of the tank, we show the nonlinear responses higher-harmonic oscillations and sub-harmonic oscillations. Various sub-harmonic oscillations branched out on some frequency regions and became significant responses with large amplitudes. Then, focusing the sub-harmonic responses, we examine relation the instability regions and the natural frequencies of the system, plotted for external frequency and the amplitude.

As the second part of an integrated theoretical and experimental study of earthquake-resisting performance of the reinforced concrete columns confined by square steel tube, this paper presents experimental results conducted over twelve reinforced concrete columns confined by square steel tubes having five kinds of wall thickness. The columns were tested under reversed cyclic lateral force while subjected to constant axial load to study the effect of wall thickness of the square steel tubes on the seismic performance of the columns. It is shown that the effect of wall thickness on the earthquake-resisting capacity of the confined columns depends on the applied axial load level; the higher the axial load was, the more significant the effect of wall thickness. Experimental results also indicate that strengthening the square steel tube with inner stiffeners in the potential failure regions of the column could enhance confinement effectiveness of the steel tube significantly. Even under high axial load with axial load ratio n=0.67, the column confined by strengthened square steel tube by inner stiffener with B/t ratio of 118 exhibited very stable response in a manner similar to the columns confined by much thicker square steel tube with B/t ratio of 43.

In steel beam-columns subjected to repeated horizontal loading, cumulative damage such as local buckling and/ or crack occurs and progresses in general with the increase of the number of repetition cycle. It is necessary to establish a method of predicting and evaluating the cumulative damage for securing the aseismic safety of steel frames. This study shows that a critical axial force for convergence-axial displacement curve can be obtained by test and the curve is effective for predicting the cumulative damage and evaluating a performance under cyclic loading. A way of predicting the cumulative damage in case of applying a variable axial force is also presented in this study.

High or low cycle fatigue damage of buildings is caused by wind loading or seismic loading, respectively. In this study, cross welded joints were tested to clarify fatigue characteristics under high to low cycle condition. Effect of elastic stress concentration factor(K_t) on fatigue characteristics is clarified from the viewpoint of fatigue life(N_f) and crack initiation life(N_i). The results obtained are as follows : (1) Fatigue characteristics of the welded joints can be qualitatively predicted by using K_t of toe shape. (2) As K_t is higher and N_f is smaller, the ratio of N_i/N_f becomes smaller, and crack growth life(N_c) is dominant in N_f (3) In the case of high cycle fatigue, fatigue characteristics can be evaluated by using S-N curve and Miner's rule. In the case of low cycle fatigue, fatigue characteristics can be evaluated by using N_c from initial defect.

Brittle fracture observed in steel buildings during the 1995 Hyogoken-Nanbu Earthquake is attributed to unexpectedly poor behaviors of welded connections. This study deals with welding effects on brittle fracture which was planned in the second series of full-scale fracture test in an extensive research project. Two types of 490MPa-tensile-strength, 40mm- thick steel plates having 150J and 45J in O-℃ Charpy impact energy absorption were tested, and two types of welding, i. e., C0_2 and electroslag weldings which introduce moderate and huge amounts of heat input, respectively, were examined. Major findings are as follows : all specimens failed brittle and there was no chance of ductile rupture during the development of plastic deformation without buckling instability ; welding heat input caused decrease in plastic deformation capacity of steel members prior to brittle fracture ; and a larger heat input escalated the reduction of capacity, however the mother steel having a larger Charpy impact energy provided a higher deformation capacity even after welded.

The high-strength bolted joint using HF-splice plates which are high strength and hardness splice plates with sawtooth-shaped projections on their friction surfaces realize a friction coefficient of over 1.2. For these bolted joints, it is xpected that increased force transfer capability greatly affects the resistance of the net section failure. In this paper, therefore, the net section strength and deformation capacity are further studied theoretically and experimentally. This paper consists of two parts: The first half is to obtain the conditions that the gross section may be used instead of the net section for calculating the elastic strength, and that no slip occurs in the joints before the plastic deformation of the member develops sufficiently. To use these conditions for design, a slip coefficient at each bolt position of the joint must be definite. So the second part is to derive the equation of this slip coefficient from experiments and theoretical considerations. Through this research, the various behavioral characteristics are shown quantitatively for design purposes.

In AIJ (Architectural Institute of Japan) design formula for slender steel-concrete composite columns, modified method of the superposed strength of a column section is adopted by considering the effect of additional bending moment (Pб moment). We have proposed an equation for evaluating the strength of slender concrete columns, and using this we showed that the strengths of concrete filled steel tubular (CFT) columns and RC columns are well predicted. In this paper, with respect to the strength of SRC columns with various steel sections, end moment (M_u) -axial force (N_u) interaction relations are calculated by assuming a sine curve deflected shape of the beam-column. As the analytical parameters, buckling length-section depth ratio, tensile reinforcement ratio and strength of concrete are selected. On the basis of the analytical results, the superposed strength is examined, and proposed.

A restoring force model of concrete filled steel tube column (CFT column) is obtained from the cyclic loading test of CFT column. The restoring force model is composed of the Tri-linear model and the Clough model and easily applicable to seismic response analysis of CFT frames under strong ground motion. The proposed model is defined by the yield strength, the ultimate strength and the accumulated plastic deformation capacity of CFT column. The equations to express these characteristics of CFT column are also derived from the test results. By the use of the energy absorbing capacity of CFT column it is ascertained that the presented model can predict the restoring force characteristics of the CFT specimens.

Effective damage assessment in terms of disaster management is proposed, which consists of both visual survey based on damage patterns of buildings for prompt service and resurvey for citizen's assent to the assessed damage. Problems which Nishinomiya City encountered in issuing certification of building damage reveals an extent of visual survey and necessity of resurvey in issuing process. Difference between two visual surveys of buildings damaged by the Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake Disaster in Tsukiji District, Amagasaki City shows difficulty in finding differential settlement caused by liquefaction and integrated damage patterns of buildings are proposed for effective field investigation.

The Object of this paper is to advance the reproduction of simulation results by improving the ordinary boundary conditions. It is to be introduced the moving boundary at the closed boundary and the non-reflective boundary at open boundary in numerical model. The simulation target is the North Bay in Ariake Sea. The reproduction in the present state on tidal currents in this bay had been examined by applying the simulation program based on the numerical model. The effects were considered in case of adding each moving boundary and non-reflective boundary condition, and then considered in case of combing these boundary conditions simultaneously. The reproduction on the tidal currents by this simulation was improved, especially by the simulation combined with the moving and non-reflective boundary conditions.
